The Worthwhile Sacrifice of Staying Home
Volume 69, Program 25

Is stay-at-home parenting worth all the sacrifices? You bet! Tune in as HSLDA President Mike Smith explains why, on today's edition of Home School Heartbeat.

Mike Smith:
“Homeward Bound,” an article on stay-at-home moms that appeared in American Prospect magazine, contained a telling quote. Author Linda Hirshman wrote, “The family—with its repetitious, socially invisible, physical tasks—is a necessary part of life, but it allows fewer opportunities for full human flourishing than public spheres like the market or the government.”

In that sentence, Hirshman reveals why the issue of stay-at-home motherhood is so hotly debated today. If we believe that “full human flourishing” can only occur in “public spheres,” then of course we will undervalue the home and the family. But Hirshman is 100 percent wrong.

The most fulfilling work we can do is that which has eternal value. For parents, that means nurturing the young lives placed in our care. We can help our children become confident adults who contribute to society. Best of all, we can know that we are preparing them for God’s kingdom.

Paul says in the book of Galatians not to weary in well doing, for in due season we will reap the reward, if we do not faint. Stay-at-home moms and dads, I would like to encourage and thank you for the sacrifices you make for your children every day. In a society that measures success by the size of a bank account, you have chosen to invest in eternal souls. There is no higher calling in this world.

And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
