Cooperative Extension Courses
Volume 69, Program 2

Mix up your homeschooled high schooler’s coursework a little. Today on Home School Heartbeat, host Mike Smith talks about one way to supplement your child’s training in life skills.

    Mike Smith:
Does your child get bored with the same old routine? One of the advantages of homeschooling through high school is that it allows your teen to study a variety of subjects in a variety of settings. He or she can learn math from a textbook, science from a video course, and English from a homeschool co-op.

Another option you may wish to explore for your student is cooperative extension courses. These inexpensive courses are made available when local governments team up with universities to offer practical information to the community. Examples of cooperative extension courses include finances, savvy consumer techniques, home economics, Master Gardener certification, and nutrition. All of these courses could provide the basis for electives in your child’s high school curriculum.

Cooperative extension classes give your teen the opportunity to learn from a specialist in the field, alongside people of different ages and backgrounds. Through these practical courses, your teens will see the value of education in everyday life, and will learn skills that will help them to become mature members of the community. It may even be possible for you and your student to take a course together.

To find out about the extension classes offered in your area, do an Internet search using your county’s name along with cooperative extension. You will also be able to access brochures, articles, and other useful information that can supplement your child’s at-home study.

Until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
