Listen Now

This week, Mike Farris is talking with one homeschooler about where her education has taken her. Listen in, today on Home School Heartbeat.

    Michael Farris:
I’m joined again today by Abby Pilgrim, who works as a production coordinator at National Geographic in Washington, D.C. Abby, what got you interested in this kind of work?

    Abby Pilgrim:
Well, I was interested in National Geographic ever since I was a kid. Loved getting the magazines and flipping through pictures. And I also have a love for the outdoors and extreme sports; I love climbing, snowboarding, adventures outside. I also have an interest in communication. I majored in journalism and love to write. And all those things really are all things that I get to use and combine in the field that I am in now. So it was a good fit.

    Mike:
How did you get the job at National Geographic?

    Abby:
I knew that the headquarters were in D.C., which is near Patrick Henry College. And they have an internship program there that I really wanted to be a part of. And so I applied online, but I also started asking every person that I met if they knew anything about how to get an internship at National Geographic. And eventually it paid off. I found someone who had a contact and followed up with them, and ended up here with the internship and it turned into a job.

    Mike:
Well, Abby, it’s great to hear your persistence pay off, and the good work that your family did in getting you prepared. And it really sounds like an exciting opportunity that you’ve found there at National Geographic. Thanks for being on the program. I’m Mike Farris.
