Learning About Politics as a Family

Are you teaching civics in your homeschool? Maybe you’re looking for ways to get the whole family involved. Generation Joshua Director Ned Ryun has some suggestions, on today’s Home School Heartbeat with Mike Smith.

    Mike Smith:
Ned, this week’s discussion about teaching citizenship has focused primarily on teens. What about families with younger children—how can they make civic involvement a family affair?

    Ned Ryun:
Mike, I believe it’s vitally important that parents teach their children from an early age about America and its rich Judeo-Christian heritage. Involved in that training should be a knowledge of how our government is meant to work according to the Constitution. But as with all things, knowledge and prayer must be followed up by action.

I remember as a 10-year-old licking and stamping envelopes for Lawrence Kansans for Life, and walking door-to-door on behalf of good candidates with my parents. It gave me a vision for being involved at an early age.

One of the other ways that Generation Joshua is encouraging making civic involvement a family affair is the Generation Joshua Summer Camp. It’s being held this year at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, Colorado—and the entire family is invited. With such speakers as David Barton of WallBuilders, Bill Jack of Worldview Academy, and Congressman Jim Ryun, as well as the mock presidential election, it will be a great week learning more about how Christians can and should be involved in the civic arena.

    Mike:
Ned, this has been a very informative and encouraging week, and we thank you. And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
