Ready to take the first step of homeschooling your high schooler? Host Mike Smith and his guest discuss taking stock of your resources, on today's Home School Heartbeat.

    Mike Smith:
I'm joined once again by HSLDA High School Coordinator Diane Kummer. Diane, as you well know, parents who are homeschooling their high schoolers face a lot of challenges. How can they find advice, support, and fellowship along the way?

    Diane Kummer:
Well, Mike, most importantly I'd say that a homeschool mom needs to stay planted in the word of God-seek the Lord as her primary source of help. Many times, the problems encountered in teaching high school don't necessarily deal with academics. Children are growing and developing spiritually, and moms need to be nourished first before they can give themselves fully to training their teens.

Secondly, be sure to let your husband lead in your homeschooling and be certain he's aware of how you and the children are doing.

Thirdly, ask the Lord to help you find another homeschooling mom with whom you can be open and honest—someone who will pray with you when you're down, or rejoice with you when you see the fruits of your labor. If possible, join a support group or your state homeschool association. Never try to go it alone while homeschooling high school.

Also, visit our website. It now includes pages on homeschooling through high school. Sign up for a free monthly email newsletter on various high school topics, and HSLDA members can also feel free to contact Becky Cooke or me by phone or email when they need advice, support, or a listening ear.

    Mike:
Thank you, Diane. Listeners, you can find out more about HSLDA's Homeschooling Thru High School program by visiting www.homeschoolheartbeat.com. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
