Adjusting Your Perspective

Do you hesitate to say no? On today's Home School Heartbeat, HSLDA President Mike Smith reminds homeschool parents that it's okay not to do everything.

    Mike Smith:
A mom in Northern Virginia has a typical dilemma: how much is too much? Ellie homeschools six of her children, who range in age from 7 to 18. She's involved in church programs, helps to lead a homeschool group, and holds co-op classes in her home. Her kids take music lessons and play sports. One is a beginning reader; at the other end of the spectrum, one is preparing to attend college.

Ellie feels a bit hassled as she goes through each day, but all of her activities seem like worthy causes. She is hesitant about making any drastic changes, and feels limited by a subjective viewpoint.

Moms, you don't have to triple-guess your instinct about what's right for your family. Start by evaluating your own physical, emotional, and spiritual health. If you're always exhausted, chances are you're too busy to get enough sleep. If you feel emotionally drained, you may not be getting enough personal time to relax and pray.

Your spouse can add to your perspective. He may notice that one of the kids needs extra attention. He may be able to help you simplify your schedule. Having your spouse's support can give you confidence as you choose between activities.

Finally, check with a friend whose opinion you trust. She can look at your life from an outsider's perspective. You may be surprised at the activities she thinks you can add or cut back!

Until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
