How could parents' rights be in danger today? Join Mike Farris as he examines one possible scenario, on Home School Heartbeat. Michael Farris: For example, the United States Senate has never ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. But this treaty remains on the table, and if the dominant political force in Washington should shift, a more liberal administration could push it through the Senate. If this treaty becomes binding on the United States, the government would have the power to intervene in a child's life whenever they think it's in "the best interest of the child." Currently, the government can intervene on this basis only by going to court and proving that parents have been abusive or have neglected their children. But if the UN Convention became binding through its ratification, all parents would have the same legal status as abusive parents. The government would have the right to override every parental decision that it deemed contrary to the child's best interest. As individuals concerned with preserving parental rights, we cannot sit around and wait for this to happen. Instead, we must be proactive while we still have the opportunity. I'm Mike Farris. |
