Michael Farris: In 1993, the Supreme Court of Hawaii clearly drew the battle lines when it ruled that same-sex couples had a constitutional right to receive marriage licenses. In this particular case, Hawaii voters trumped the court's decision through a statewide initiative. But in the nationwide war against homosexual marriage, the response of the pro-family community has been a little late. We would have been far better off if we had responded decisively when we first saw the warning signs that same-sex marriage was a real issue. I use the story of the battle to save marriage as a cautionary tale. This week, we'll look at a similar battle over parental rights that looms on the horizon. There are three direct threats to parental rights. First, there's the threat of international law. Second, there's a rising number of anti-parent politicians who believe, like Hillary Clinton, that "it takes a village" to raise a child. Third, there are conservative justices on the Supreme Court who believe that parents' rights, while a good idea, are not constitutionally protected until the rights are explicitly written in black and white. We must not repeat earlier mistakes by waiting until it's too late to begin fighting for parental rights. I'm Mike Farris. |
