Looking for homeschooling resources online? Today on Home School Heartbeat, HSLDA's president, Mike Smith, gives you some tips.
Mike Smith:
There are many ways to search for information on the Internet, and fortunately, most of them are free. Many websites exist to help you find just the information you may be looking for, no matter how obscure. There are many search engine websites out there, and you will probably find one that suits your needs better than most.
As you search the Internet for topics of interest, keep in mind that you will likely find more information on any given topic than a child can soak up through a computer screen. It's important not to become a slave to cyber-learning. Make sure your children have opportunities for reading real books as well. Hands-on experience and field trips are also important, to give learning multiple dimensions.
As you become more familiar with the Internet, you will discover that there is so much more information available than just supplements to your children's research projects. Many homeschooling websites have online lesson plans available to parents free of charge. Others help parents create unit studies or prepare a child's curriculum scope and sequence.
When deciding the best ways to educate your children, there's no point in reinventing the wheel. Many websites are designed to help you learn from the experiences of other parents.
And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
