By choosing to home school have you made the decision to become a one-income family? If you sometimes wonder how to make ends meet, join us today as author Jonni McCoy shares her story on this week's Home School Heartbeat. Mike Smith: Jonni, thanks for joining us today. What made you decide to forego the second income and become a stay-at-home mom? Jonni McCoy: Well, when my husband and I had our first child we were living in the very expensive San Francisco bay area. And we were each bringing home half of our joint income. And my son came along and I saw that great little face and I didn't really want to put him in daycare. So I worked part-time for a while and after a while I really felt like I wanted to be full-time and do a better job of what I wanted to do as a mom. So we were in the same home on half of what we were living on before. And it was a very small home so there was nothing extravagant about it. It was only 1,000 square feet. And so we had a real hard time figuring out what we were going to do and my husband thought I'd either go back to work or we'd end up moving. And I didn't want to do either one. So I took it as the ultimate challenge to learn how to become frugal. Mike: Have you regretted this decision in the past? Jonni: I have never once regretted it and looked back. That little tiny boy that I had is now 15 years old and I love being at home with him and we eventually started homeschooling. And I have never looked back and wished I had more money instead. |
