If you're looking for a strategy to help motivate your reluctant learner, then join Home School Legal Defense Association's Chairman and General Counsel, Michael Farris, as he talks with seasoned home educator Debra Bell on today's edition of Home School Heartbeat. Michael Farris: Okay, Debra, let's get practical. Most homeschool moms I know are looking for practical ways to solve the problems they run into as they teach their kids. For the next three days I'd like you to share your top 10 strategies for overcoming a lack of motivation to learn. Have at it! Debra Bell: Okay, well, here goes! First, most importantly, I think we need to build faith in each of our kids that they can learn. We need to show them this with the Word of God: His faithfulness in providing us with every good gift, everything pertaining to godliness, every grace we needeven in getting an education. Secondly, we need to adapt to a child's learning style, and in my book, The Ultimate Guide to Homeschooling, I do talk about this, butfor instance-my daughter Christie is an auditory learner, so we use a lot of audiotapes to help her acquire information. And my third strategy today is to reevaluate our methods. If we're running a rigid routine program, we could consider spicing things up with a hands-on unit study or a special field trip. Mike, homeschooling is all about choice. Enjoy the freedom you have to mix things up when the routine gets stale. Michael Farris: We'll continue our conversation tomorrow with Debra on our top 10 strategies for motivating a reluctant learner. I'm Mike Farris. |
