Standing for Truth

Why is education today so different than when I was a kid? How can we reclaim our culture for Christ? Mike Smith offers a solution today on Home School Heartbeat.

    Mike Smith:

All week we've been talking about the conflict between truth and tolerance in our nation's schools. Like a slippery slope, most parents didn't see it coming.

The federal government, state government, teacher's unions, and educational philosophers have played a role in this gradual, no-longer-subtle change.

Tolerance teaching eliminates critical thinking. If you tolerate everything, you stop evaluating ideas and lifestyles by any reasonable criteria. To stem the tide, parents must take back the reins of education. Homeschoolers have chosen to do this based on a strong conviction that God has given them the ultimate responsibility for training their children. But public school parents are determined to take back their schools as well.

Over 700 angry parents in Harwich, Massachusetts, petitioned the school council to eliminate its tolerance curriculum. The school council agreed to give parents written notice so their children could be exempt. Recently, the Ohio State Board of Education voted unanimously to institute the teach-the-controversy approach to instruction in biological origins. Critical analysis of evolutionary theory will be included in Ohio's science curriculum. Parents throughout the country can push for the true scientific exploration of this subject.

We applaud all parents who have the courage to take a stand for truth. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
