The Pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving, rejoicing in their newfound freedom. Join Michael Farris and his guest in giving thanks for homeschooling freedom today on Home School Heartbeat.
Michael Farris:
Lisa Whelchel is my guest again today. We've been talking this week about her book, So You're Thinking about Homeschooling. It was exciting to see how many different ways people could successfully homeschool in your book, Lisa. Can you talk about some of the families you got to know?
Lisa Whelchel:
Sure. Oh my goodness, there's so many of my favorites. I love the story about the single mom who because of socialization—now we get that question all the time, about if we're afraid that our kids won't get the socialization they need—well, in this case her kids got the socialization that they didn't need, and in junior high especially one of them was really bullied. And so she thought, "I've got to protect him, but I don't know how because I can't homeschool him and still be a single mom; I have to work." And yet she made it work. She looked around; she searched around, found there were many opportunities for her to work out of her home. She eventually opened up a daycare and was able to homeschool her children and protect them in those crucial years. There's another story in there about a dad who is going to school at night, but he's homeschooling the kids during the day and loving it. So there's so many different ways to homeschool and so many different situations; it's mind boggling.
Mike:
It's great to live in a country where families are free to work out the best solution for their kids' educational challenges. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. I'm Mike Farris.
