What's the most important thing I can teach my child? Chairman Michael Farris talks about the spiritual power of a mother's teaching on today's Home School Heartbeat. Michael Farris All moms teach their children. Moms teach manners. For centuries, moms have been civilizing the whole world. But manners are not the most important thing to teach your children. Homeschooling moms teach academics, taking on an extraordinarily active role in the teaching of their children. But academics are not the most important thing either. Christian mothers teach their children about God, but even that is not the most important thing. The most important thing a mother can teach her child is to believe in God. But how? Eunice, the mother of Timothy, taught him faith in God by living it before him. She followed God's command to teach her son God's truth wherever they were. Children quickly learn to follow what they see. My wife Vickie and I determined that teaching our children to believe in God required us to model our faith before them day after day. By homeschooling, Vickie was able to be with them for most of their day. She became their primary role model rather than their immature peers. Moms, you have the power to teach your children the most important thing: belief in God. Your actions and your words will have a powerful, perhaps decisive, impact on their faith. I'm Mike Farris. |
