Stimulating academics

Does homeschooling help my children become all God wants them to be? For an answer, tune in to today's Home School Heartbeat with host Mike Smith and his guest, Zan Tyler.

    Mike Smith:
One of the tools you describe in your book is "stimulating academics." What are they?

    Zan Tyler:
Mike, I think homeschooling is so successful academically because it is education that occurs in context. Parents know their children—what motivates them, how they learn, what their interests and passions are in life—and when we introduce academics into this environment, the results are really astonishing and astounding, as we're seeing in the homeschooling community today.

    Mike:
Well, how do the other tools for developing our children's potential lay a foundation for stimulating academics?

    Zan:
Well, Mike, the other tools—establishing identity, cultivating intimacy, helping your child discover purpose, developing a biblical worldview, and building character through discipleship—provide a very real context for academics in the home. They keep academics from being taught in a vacuum. When the home and homeschooling is functioning optimally, the academics will be overwhelmingly successful.

    Mike:
Well, thanks, Zan. Tomorrow we'll discuss another key theme in your book—communication. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
