How can we help our children achieve their fullest potential? This week on Home School Heartbeat, HSLDA President Mike Smith discusses this question with homeschooling mom and lobbyist Zan Tyler.

    Mike Smith:
Today I'm talking with Zan Tyler, whose latest book, Seven Tools for Cultivating Your Child's Potential, just came out this summer. Thank you for joining us again, Zan.

    Zan Tyler:
Mike, it is always a pleasure to be with you.

    Mike:
Zan, your book talks about "preparing a place" for our children—not only in our homes, but in the world. What do you mean by this?

    Zan:
Well, as parents, Mike, I think the greatest thing that we can do for our children is to model Christ—who He is and the way He works in our homes. John 14:2 tells us that He has gone away to prepare a place for us. Just as Jesus has thoughtfully and lovingly prepared a place for us, He's obviously placed within us a desire to prepare a place for our children. Preparing this place means preparing a physical home, obviously, but I think that is only the beginning. We are to work diligently to prepare a place in this world for our children by carefully cultivating their God-given gifts and personalities. Our goal is to prepare them to fulfill their God-ordained places in this world, in relation to their occupational calling, their calling as future spouses and parents, their calling as citizens, and their calling as Christians. And I think this is the great foundational work as homeschooling parents that we can lay in our children's lives.

    Mike:
Thank you, Zan. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
