My child wants to join the military—ow do I help him achieve that goal? Tune in to today's Home School Heartbeat for advice on where to start.
Mike Smith:
With me today is Jonathan Bisulca, a high school senior. Jonathan, what steps have you taken once you decided to join the Marines?
Jonathan Bisulca:
Well, I began to gather information to help me with my decisions as to what I wanted to do as a Marine, and what was the best way to accomplish that goal. I did this through reading books about the Marine Corps, through the Internet—especially military.com, which can help you find a recruiter. Most importantly, I talked with my recruiters and Officer Selection Officer and Marines I know. This is because my recruiters in OSO have all the information I need about service in the Marines. And I talked to Marines I know because they have a wealth of wisdom to help me with my decisions concerning service in the Marines.
Mike:
In your visits to the recruiter, did your homeschool background become an issue?
Jonathan:
No, not really. I discussed with my recruiters the fact that I was homeschooled, and they said that's not a problem. They also asked me how I liked being homeschooled, and I told them that I did. And they also asked me what kinds of homeschooling activities I did and whether I had taken college classes, and I told them that I had.
Mike:
So they said your homeschool high school diploma was not a problem?
Jonathan:
No.
Mike:
Well, thank you, Jonathan. That was very helpful. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
