Michael Farris:
Our guest today is Senator Tom Coburn from Oklahoma. Dr. Coburn, what are the important pieces of legislation before the Senate—now and on the horizon?
Senator Coburn:
Well, Mike, a short-term issue is the funding for the government. We have not won the battle. We continue to steal the future from our kids and our grandkids by spending money that we don't have. We're going to have a $544 billion deficit this year, and we continue to see members of Congress put money in for their own political career. And they end up thinking more about the next election than the next generation. And then the reform of Social Security—we've seen this battle go back and forth. But to really uphold the honor for our kids and our grandkids, we have to reform these programs. We have to carry the battle. There's going to be a lot of pro-life battles, battles for kids and parenting—for example, the Parent's Right to Know Act, where parents ought to be involved in the decision making about the health care of their children at family planning clinics. We hope to have that on the floor this year. We probably won't win it this year, but we'll win it eventually.
Mike:
Thank you so much, Senator Coburn. Tomorrow, we're going to talk about how homeschoolers and other interested people can get involved with what's going on in Congress. I'm Mike Farris.
