Mike Smith: Egypt is full of pieces of the past. Unusual architecture, huge statues, and monuments to powerful pharaohs still linger. Their massive structures were built without cranes, bulldozers, or any of the equipment that constructs modern buildings. Egypt's monuments were built with a creative energy that can inspire your children today. Egypt was home to two of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The Pharos of Alexandria was the world's first lighthouse. It stood 400 feet tall on the coast of the Mediterranean. Another of the ancient world's seven wonders was the Great Pyramid. It was 484 feet high and served as a king's burial site. Although it is Egypt's largest pyramid, the smaller pyramids amaze us, too. Archaeologists are still puzzled by the question of how the Egyptians were able to build these gigantic tombs without modern technology. From ancient drawings, they know that millions of heavy stone blocks were dragged up ramps to construct the pyramids. It is estimated that, using the manpower of thousands of slaves and other laborers, it took about 20 years to build the Great Pyramid. The next time your children are frustrated by an obstacle, encourage them to think creatively to overcome it, just like the Ancient Egyptians did. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
