Why would a successful classroom teacher of 15 years decide to homeschool her children? This week on Home School Heartbeat, host Mike Smith talks with a member of the 2004 All-USA Teacher Team about why she did just that.

    Mike Smith:

Last year, Pamela Hall was a teacher at a Department of Defense school in Germany, where she was honored by USA Today for her outstanding approach to classroom learning. Now, she's a homeschooling mom in Chesapeake, Virginia. Thank you for joining us, Pamela.

    Pamela Hall:

    Thank you.

    Mike:

Why did you decide to give up your 15-year career as a schoolteacher to home educate your two boys?

    Pamela:

Oh, the timing was right, and we were led by God. We moved here from Germany, and so we weren't sure about the community we would live in or the house that we would find. So, we thought the benefits of homeschooling would meet the needs of our children. And as it turns out, we actually live in a great neighborhood with one of the best schools. But my children have already informed me that they like homeschooling so much that they're not going back to public school next year. And the other reason was time, more quality time with our families. Not time spent rushing home, making dinner, doing the homework, going to bed, and waking up and doing it all over again. We now have time for daily devotions, and we can instill our values. And the children have time to play, and do sports and piano. So, we feel that we have reclaimed our family.

    Mike:

Well, congratulations, Pamela. I know a lot of our listeners can identify with those reasons. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
