Today on Home School Heartbeat, Home School Legal Defense Association President Mike Smith talks with one homeschool mom about how she homeschooled her kids right up to college. Mike Smith: What specific things did you do to prepare your daughters for college, Adele? Adele Sekerak: We added high school courses that most colleges look for: four years of English, Algebra I and II, geometry, biology, two years of foreign language. We also added chemistry and physics. Two of our girls didn't know what they wanted to study in college until their senior year in high school. We wanted them to be prepared regardless of their choice. We also incorporated a college vocabulary course to prepare for college entrance exams. All the girls took the PSAT, the ACT, and the SAT. Mike: Adele, what advice do you have for parents whose children are now ready to attend college? Adele: I would suggest that you take the time to visit the colleges your son or daughter is seriously considering. Ask to sit in on classes. Request that your child spend a night in the dormitory. This gives a good view of the student body and whether or not they're like-minded. Also, if you're considering a secular college, I recommend an apologetics course or seminar, like those offered by Summit Ministries or Worldview Academy. Mike: Thank you, Adele, for joining us this week and helping us with this most important subject: how to prepare our children for college. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
