What's a homeschool parent to do when his or her child reaches high school age? Can you homeschool through high school? This week on Home School Heartbeat, HSLDA President Mike Smith answers that question. Mike Smith: While homeschooling is always a challenge, it seems to become more and more complicated the older our children get. As our students move through elementary school to high school, we as parents start to wonder: Can I homeschool my children through high school? What if I make a terrible mistake? Will my homeschooled high schooler have trouble getting into college? Will my student athlete be eligible for a sports scholarship? Although homeschooling your children through high school can be daunting, it's not impossible. You probably already know of quite a few homeschooled students who have gone on to attend college, start promising careers, or begin homeschooling their own children. Those achievements are within reach for your family, too. It can be easy to think that successful homeschooling means we must all follow the same course of study or have the same goals in mind, but that's not the case. There's no one-size-fits-all pattern for homeschooling. Every family is differentthey choose to homeschool for different reasons, use different curricula, and emphasize different subject matter. Homeschooling is successful because it allows each family to tailor their course of study to their own unique strengths and convictions. This week, I'll be talking with homeschooling parents and students about overcoming some common high school challenges. And until then, I'm Mike Smith.
