Homeschooling prepares students for many different challenges. Today on Home School Heartbeat, Mike Smith is joined by a high schooler who became her state's Junior Miss last year. Mike Smith: Today I'm talking with Lizzy Tyler. How did homeschooling prepare you to compete in South Carolina's Junior Miss? Lizzy Tyler: Well, the most important way that it prepared me was I was really used to speaking in front of adults. And a lot of what they look for in South Carolina's Junior Miss is someone who can articulate their beliefs and opinions well. And I was really used to doing that growing up in the homeschooling arena. I was able to put a lot of time into my dance training, which was my talent. (I did a tap dance for my talent.) And it gave me a really strong academic background, and academics is actually 20% of your score. Mike: Lizzy, I understand during the interview portion of the competition, the judges asked you an interesting question about homeschooling. How did you reply? Lizzy: Well, that was actually the very first thing they asked me about, was homeschooling. And I just talked about how it had given me such a strong belief system. Because of homeschooling, I really knew who I was and what I believed. I talked about how it gave me such a great relationship with my family and especially such a good relationship with my mom. And I really talked about, too, how it gave me the opportunity to commit time to develop the gifts and abilities that God had given me. I just really tried to share with them from my heart and soul how much of who I am I feel like is a direct result of homeschooling. Mike: Well, obviously you were very successful because you won. And thank you for being with us today. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith. How can the Home School Legal Defense Association help you?
