Homeschooling allows students to achieve their dreams. Join us on Home School Heartbeat, as HSLDA President Mike Smith interviews one such student. Mike Smith: In addition to winning the Junior Duck Stamp Contest, Adam Nisbett has also won the HSLDA art contest. Which came first, your love for bird watching or your artistry? Adam Nisbett: It's hard to say. I've enjoyed both for as long as I can remember. And since almost all of my artwork has been of birds, it's kind of been like one big interest. I've just found that while I'm out watching the birds, it makes me want to paint what I'm seeing and then while I'm painting, it inspires me to want to go out and watch the real creation that God's made. I got started in artwork at a pretty early age. My mother has a bachelor's degree in art, and she used to teach classes to the homeschooled students in the area. So, I would just kind of sit in on those and watch what was going on there. And then I'd also just draw the birds at our feeders. So it all kind of just grew together. Mike: How would you advise aspiring artists? Adam: Well, the first lesson is to always practice. It does take a long time to become really good, but the more you spend actually drawing, the faster you'll get better. And just have fun while you're doing it. It can become really boring if you're not having fun. So, just don't worry if it's not turning out right. Just start over; do another one. Just continue practicing and you'll eventually get better. Mike: Adam, that's great advice. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith. If you'd like to receive Home School Heartbeat's daily email transcript, visit us online at homeschoolheartbeat.com.
