Mike Smith: My guest today is Adam Nisbett. Last year, Adam won the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest with his painting of ducks that he raised himself. When did you start homeschooling, Adam? Adam Nisbett: I've been homeschooled from the very beginning. Mike: Adam, you're not just an artist-you also love bird watching and you've been part of the robotics team. How did homeschooling allow you to pursue a wide variety of interests? Adam: Well, it just taught me how to learn on my own. If I get interested in something and want to learn about it, all I need is just a good book on the subject and I'm ready to go. A couple years ago I got interested in a middle school robotics competition, so I just put together a team of my friends and we started learning about it. And we eventually got into some of the higher-level E programming. We hadn't known anything about it, but we just slowly worked at it on our own. We ended up winning competitions. So, it's just allowed me to focus on whatever I want. It's given me the flexibility to move my schedule around to accommodate what I'm working on. If I want to go on a morning bird watch, I just can do that in the morning and then catch up on the school in the afternoon or do extra schoolwork the previous day. So it's allowed me to really focus on the things that I'm interested in. Mike: Thank you, Adam. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith. How can the Home School Legal Defense Association help you?
