Children see more than we often give them credit for. Mike Farris, President of the Home School Legal Defense Association, gets the kids' perspective on Mother's Day, today on Home School Heartbeat.

    Michael Farris:
    Emily, how old are you?

    Emily:
    Eight and a half.

    Mike:
    And what's your mommy's name?

    Emily:
    Geni.

    Mike:
    What do you call her?

    Emily:
    Mommy.

    Mike:
How many brothers and sisters do you have?

    Emily:
    One sister and four brothers.

    Mike:
And does your mom take good care of you?

    Emily:
    Uh-huh!

    Mike:
    Does she cook for you?

    Emily:
    Yeah.

    Mike:
    Is she a good cook?

    Emily:
    Yeah.

    Mike:
You need to eat some more of those good oatmeal raisin cookies that she makes. Do you like those cookies?

    Emily:
    Yep!

    Mike:
What are some of the other things that she makes that you really like?

    Emily:
    Macaroni and cheese and salad.

    Mike:
Yeah, that's kind of my favorite dinner, macaroni and cheese and salad. Seth, how old are you right now?

    Seth:
    Five.

    Mike:
    When's your birthday?

    Seth:
    July 14th.

    Mike:
    July 14th—that's Bastille Day.

    Seth:
Yeah, I know. That's how one of my cousins remembers it.

    Mike:
    Okay, what is Bastille Day?

    Seth:
    I don't know.

    Mike:
Oh, okay. Do you cut off the heads of crickets and stuff to celebrate Bastille Day?

    Seth:
    No, we don't celebrate it.

    Mike:
Okay, you don't celebrate it. Anything else you want to add?

    Nathan:
    Happy Mother's Day, Mom.

    Mike:
Why should she have a happy Mother's Day?

    Nathan:
    Because we all love her.

    Mike:
Emily, we are going to play this tape for your mom on Mother's Day. Is there something you'd like to say to her?

    Emily:
    Mommy, I love you.
