What's so special about homeschooling through high school anyway? Today on Home School Heartbeat, Zan Tyler and Mike Smith focus on the uniqueness of homeschooling.

    Mike Smith:
How do parents fulfill standard high school requirements to get into college and yet maintain the uniqueness of a homeschool setting?

    Zan Tyler:
The very nature of homeschooling in high school intimidates parents so much in the beginning. But I think once parents settle into a routine and get one or two or three courses under their belt, then they realize that they can really derive benefit from the strengths of home education: the one-on-one, the ability to take advantage of field studies and apprenticeships, internships—all the things that make homeschooling unique. I also think that even with a very rigorous academic college prep program you can do a lot of integrated studies with literature and the sciences or with literature in history, literature-art, architecture, those types of things, and so there are a number of ways where you can maintain your creativity. I think I would encourage parents that still the basis is that dialogue that occurs in the home. Whatever your child is studying, the dialogue that happens is the thing that causes the brain to work on a different level. Regardless of what's happening in the high school or the homeschool, as long as the parent is constantly dialoguing with the child on meaningful topics, I think that an exciting education will occur.

    Mike:
Well, thanks, Zan. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
