A daunting task

This week on Home School Heartbeat, Mike Smith is joined by homeschool veteran, writer, and mother of three Zan Tyler to talk about the high school years.

    Mike Smith:
Homeschooling high school seems like a daunting task for many. What do you tell parents that have that concern?

    Zan Tyler:
Mike, that is a good question, because once we leave the realm of elementary school and we enter high school, I think parents begin to realize, "This is for real, and the fun has left homeschooling." I think the first thing you need to sit down and do is plan out as much of your child's high school experience as you can, and in that planning you can evaluate which subjects you feel like you're able to teach as the teaching parent, and which subjects you're going to need help with. I think the thing that will save the teaching parent as much heartache as anything else is to acknowledge at the beginning that there is no way that one person can teach everything that child needs to know. And so by doing that, then you begin to break it down into things you can teach, things you can teach with help, and things you will absolutely have to get somebody else to teach in its entirety. And when you have those three things done, then you're able to break high school down into a manageable task.

    Mike:
That's a very good answer. Until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
