Parents supply the wood for the fire of education Volume 59, Program 2 3/29/2005
William Butler Yeats said, "Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire." Home School Legal Defense Association Chairman and General Counsel Mike Farris talks with homeschool mom and author Terri Camp about how to put good wood on the fires of education, today on Home School Heartbeat.
Michael Farris:
Terri, you've written a book called Ignite the Fire! that outlines your family's approach to home education. Today, let's talk about what you consider the "good wood" that will keep your child's passion for learning alive.
Terri Camp:
Well, Mike, the best "wood" that we've found is the guidance and instruction of the Lord. He really knows our children and what they need for their future more than we do. And we have sought to figure out a way to tap into His guidance. We use what we call our "fuel book." And this is just a simple notebook that I take with me into my prayer closet, or Steve and I might take it somewhere on a date or something. We have one for each child. And as we pray for them, we listen to what the Lord is telling us He wants them to do. So we record those instructions. For example, we were praying for David one time, and the Lord said, "Encourage him when he comes to you with math conversations," which was something that I totally wasn't doing before. But the Lord really told me that I needed to discuss those things with him, and we just saw such fruit in that as he blossomed and wanted to learn more and more about math conceptsand now he's 9 and doing an algebra book!
