Have you and your children ever experienced school burnout? Home School Legal Defense Association Chairman and General Counsel Mike Farris talks with homeschool mom Terri Camp about reigniting the fires of learning, on this edition of Home School Heartbeat.
Michael Farris:
Terri, welcome to the program.
Terri Camp:
Thanks, Mike. I'm delighted to be here.
Mike:
Tell our listeners about your family and what motivated you to homeschool.
Terri:
Well, I have eight children, and we were motivated to homeschool because we wanted our kids not to just be well educated, but we really wanted them to follow the talent that God had given them. And we felt that if they spent all that time doing bookwork and things like that, that they wouldn't be able to do that.
Mike:
You talk about schooling by FIRE. What do you mean by that?
Terri:
Well, we developed an idea for what we called our "FIRE school," and we took an acronym for FIRE, which is Freedom Is Real Education. II Corinthians 3:17 says, "Now the Lord is a spirit, and where the spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." And that's what we're talking aboutsurrendering all of our thoughts and our desires to the will of God. He didn't design our children to be carbon copies of each other, so as homeschooling parents, we must be willing to help our children to develop those talents and passions that God has given them.
Mike:
Moms, if you need some encouragement to stoke the fires of learning for your kids, you'll want to tune in all this week. You can get in touch with Terri at her website, http://www.ignitethefire.com. I'm Mike Farris.
