What are some of the struggles faced by Southern Baptist homeschoolers? Join Mike Smith and his guest, Elizabeth Watkins, as they talk about some of the challenges facing the Southern Baptist community on today's Home School Heartbeat.
Mike Smith:
My guest this week is Elizabeth Watkins. Elizabeth, what are some of the needs among Southern Baptist homeschoolers?
Elizabeth Watkins:
Well, homeschooled students really are different. Christian classical education, which is increasing in popularity among the homeschooling community, is training our future generation to really worship God with our minds. A study of theology, which is supposedly the queen of the sciences, should be at the core of every classical education-but honestly, many churches are failing our children. Our 14-year-old daughter is studying the works of Francis Schaeffer and also the Greco-Roman classics, and she would feel very out of place now in a youth ministry that's focused entirely on entertainment. We're so blessed to have found a pastor who is also a college professor and an author, and he places as high a priority on discipleship as he does on evangelism. He also holds the fathers of our church accountable for the spiritual leadership of their homes. And our children enjoy so much the special time of reading God's Word with their daddy. I have had one Christian college faculty member tell me that incoming freshmen are not as grounded in the foundational tenets of their faith. And so by encouraging SBCHEA members to catechize their children before college, the students will be much better prepared.
Mike:
Well, thank you, Elizabeth. Listeners, please join us next time as we continue our discussion of the Southern Baptist Church and Home Education Association. And until then, I'm Mike Smith.
