Southern Baptists have been making news in the debate about how Christian children should be educated. Join Mike Smith on today's Home School Heartbeat as he talks with the cofounder of the Southern Baptist Church and Home Education Association.
With us this week is Elizabeth Watkins, cofounder of Southern Baptist Church and Home Education Association. Thanks for joining us, Elizabeth.
Well, thank you. It's an honor.
Elizabeth, why did you decide to form this group?
Well, Mike, I just saw homeschooling families leaving the Southern Baptist Convention in droves, really because of a lack of support and encouragement at both the local church and the denomination level. And we almost left as well, and it was really breaking my heart because I have family ties going back to the mid-18th century with the Southern Baptist Convention. And about three years ago, the Holy Spirit just really laid it on my heart to do research on why this was happening, and then I found hope. The Southern Baptist homeschoolers really have our champions within the convention. And SBC is providing a connection for these families and a way to communicate with our biblical scholars, professors, and leadership. An unexpected blessing is how many pastors' wives are involved in our ministry. And that's been a huge encouragement for me.
And why were people leaving, Elizabeth?
Well, because it's a lifestyle change, it's not just an educational choice. And it affects the youth ministry, it affects discipleship, and it affects social activities.
Well, thank you for being with us today. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
