How does a family handle financial crisis?

Can homeschooling continue when a family financial crisis strikes? Michael Farris, Chairman and General Counsel of Home School Legal Defense Association, speaks to families facing difficult times on today's Home School Heartbeat.

    Michael Farris:
How can a homeschooling family handle the loss of a job, a costly accident, or some other financial crisis?

Homeschooling families facing financial hardship should first remember that, despite curriculum costs, public education is not necessarily cheaper taken as a whole. Also, your local support group may offer a borrowing program for used curriculum. It's quite possible that another family will have a 2nd-grade history book you need, discarded two years ago by their youngest child. If you don't know how to contact your local support group or homeschooling state organization, contact HSLDA for the phone number of your state organization and we'll help put you in touch.

But what about those families that need a second income? Many homeschooling mothers have successfully operated home businesses, or found a job with flexible hours, or even involved the children in money-making ventures. While you do need to be wary of hidden costs that a home business may involve, it's also very possible to bring in some extra income without sacrificing the educational good of your children.

It's important for every homeschool family to remember why they began homeschooling: because it's best for your children. Remember the why, and the how will usually follow. This is Michael Farris.
