Recently I heard motherhood described as the job that will drive you crazy. Between the hours, the low pay, the uncooperative employees, and the 18- to 20-year training requirements, most reasonable people wouldn't take the job. Add on a large family and homeschooling, and you're talking about a commitment of titanic proportions.


My wife Vickie has been homeschooling for 20 years. She's got another 13 to go if our youngest graduates at 18. Like a marathon runner halfway through a race, finishing sometimes seems distant and overwhelming.


So moms who've been in the trenches a long time, take heart. Your job description requires supernatural strength and wisdom. In Revelation 3:8, Jesus tells the church at Philadelphia that he knows they have little strength, but they have kept his Word.


I Peter 4:11 reminds us that we serve with the strength God provides. Jesus knows what kind of strength you need, and he says, "Come, I will give you rest." To the church at Ephesus Jesus said, "I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name and have not grown weary" (Revelation 2:2a, 3; NIV). If God leads your family to homeschool for the long haul, seek the strength only God can give to make it to the finish line. I'm Mike Farris.
