Although online resources can add a new dimension to your homeschool, there are hazards to using the Internet that every parent needs to be aware of. On today's Home School Heartbeat, Mike Smith and Zan Tyler discuss the ways you can protect your family.

    Mike Smith:
Unfortunately, we all know that there are dangerous materials on the websites. How do we protect our children from that?

    Zan Tyler:
You know, Mike, that is a great question, and it is something we all need to be concerned about. I would say it's like anything else we do as a parent. We know what our children are doing, we know where they are, we know when they're doing it, and we set parameters and we expect them to abide by the parameters that we set. It may mean rather than having computers in individual bedrooms, we have a computer that everybody uses in the family room and it goes off when the parents go to bed, and so that the only time the computer is on is when there's family traffic going through particular areas. And I think a little bit of supervision and accountability goes a long way. And I would say, with your sons, the fathers need to take the initiative in explaining to them the dangers of pornography. Because even mothers and daughters accidentally happen upon pornographic sites. We need to prepare our children ahead of time for the dangers and explain as much as they're able to understand.

    Mike:
I think that's an excellent answer. I'm Mike Smith.
