Are you constantly comparing your family to others? Home School Legal Defense Association Chairman and General Counsel Michael Farris talks about avoiding perfectionism on today's Home School Heartbeat.
Michael Farris:
Depending on what day you visit our home, we could be living out the Little House on the Prairie series or recreating the story of the woman who lived in a shoe. I'm sure it's that way at your house, too. We all have a tendency to expect perfection, and end up disappointed and despondent when we miss the mark. As homeschoolers, I think we easily fall into this trap because our decisions deeply affect the lives of our children. Making the right choices for them is critical.
As my wife Vickie and I have made decisions for our family, one principle has kept us from fearing the future: we can trust ourselves and our children to God's perfect faithfulness. Though we cannot hope to be perfect parents or make perfect decisions about our homeschooling, we can trust ourselves to God, who knows all the intimate details of our lives and theirs. Though we cannot hope to follow him perfectly, we can trust him to redeem what is lost and to cover over even a multitude of sins with his perfect love.
All week we've been talking about giving our perfectionism a good dose of reality so that we can avoid the discouragement that comes from never reaching our goals. The best way to persevere for the long haul is to keep focused on our perfect God, trusting him to be perfectly faithful to meet every need. I'm Mike Farris.
