Michael Farris: It's easy to forget what it takes to learn a new skill when you've been using it for years. Our 15-year-old daughter Jessica is learning to drive, and I'm reminded of all the details one has to assimilate before becoming a skillful driver. Finding the best way to teach a tough subject can take time, experimentation, and a few failed attempts along the way. Without realistic expectations about your child's ability to learn and the learning process, discouragement can set in for both you and your student. A constant struggle with a particular subject is a signal to stop and analyze what's going on. You could be dealing with a lack of preparation, mental readiness, or possibly some laziness in your child. Perhaps it's time for a different approach. Talk with more-experienced moms to find out how they've handled similar struggles. But above all, don't let the lack of momentum deter you from persevering. Trust God to show you how to handle the tough stuff. And remember Philippians 4:13: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (NKJV). I'm Mike Farris. |
