Have you ever thought about how Christians should be reacting to a godless culture? HSLDA's president, Mike Smith, encourages homeschoolers not to withdraw from the culture but to engage it, on today's Home School Heartbeat.

    Mike Smith:
There's a lot of debate in the public forum over the "culture wars"—the idea Christians should be battling against the "forces of darkness" in our society. But before we pull out the artillery, we need to know what it is we're fighting.

You may have heard the phrase, "Culture is religion externalized," meaning that culture is how our society lives out its belief system. This, in a sense, is where the rubber meets the road.

Author and pastor Terry Crist has written several books encouraging Christians to engage their culture. He defines culture as "the prevailing value system of a group of people expressed through politics, education, economics, art, music, entertainment, athletics and science. Culture is the prevalent expression of human life within the context of a nation, region, or particular ethnicity."

We must teach our children more than how to evangelize. We must teach them how to apply God's principles to any field of study they choose to undertake.

We must not miss the opportunity to equip our children for the future. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.

Home School Legal Defense Association has put together a free resource sheet with books and other materials that can help you teach your children how to be salt and light.
