We've been talking this week with Bruce Shortt, board member of Exodus Mandate. Bruce, do you see Southern Baptists and other Christians ultimately embracing Christian education?
Bruce Shortt:
Yes, Mike, I do. Government schools are in the process of collapsing. According to the U.S. government, 68% of fourth-graders can't read proficiently, and roughly 50% of fourth-grade minority children can't read at even a basic level. Despite the efforts of government-school administrators to conceal the true levels of crime and violence within government schools, investigative journalists have been writing stories about the extent to which stabbings, rapes, and other serious crimes aren't reported by government schools in an effort to keep parents in the dark. Most government schools have curriculum or programs designed to mainstream acceptance of homosexuality. More and more Christians are beginning to see that the little red schoolhouse has become a little whited sepulcher. Recently, a black pastor and former member of Congress, Floyd Flake, remarked, "Our children are being educationally killed every day in public schools and nobody says a thing." Christian parents need to remember that they only have one chance to get their children's education right. The stakes are high, and there are no do-overs.
