Join Mike Smith and his guest Bruce Shortt on today's Home School Heartbeat. They'll talk about how Southern Baptists are grappling with the question of providing a Christian education for their children.
Mike Smith:
My guest this week is Bruce Shortt. How are Southern Baptists and others responding to the renewed debate over Christian education?
Bruce Shortt:
When we began the debate within the Southern Baptist Convention about educating Christian children in government schools, we had no idea that the message would resonate as strongly as it has within the SBC and across denominational lines. In retrospect, it's clear that many Christians, without regard to denomination, are beginning to see how damaging government schools are to Christian children and they're looking for leadership on this issue. In addition, several organizations have been formed in response to the resolution. For example, Get the Kids Out, a Christian, interdenominational organization devoted to getting Christian children out of government schools, was started as a direct result of the resolution. Some Baptists have also expressed an interest in introducing similar resolutions in SBC state conventions. And Christians in other denominations have indicated that they would like to introduce Christian education resolutions. Christian leaders are going to be hearing more about this issue in the future as more parents become aware of how profoundly damaging government schools are to our children spiritually, morally, and academically.
Mike:
Thank you, Bruce. Listeners, join us next time as we continue our discussion of Southern Baptists and Christian education. And I'm Mike Smith.

Combining rigorous research with a biblical perspective, Bruce Shortt’s new book is based on a clear understanding of God’s educational mandate to parents. Of particular interest to parents, pastors, and educators is a thoroughly documented analysis of the inevitable results of governmental school systems: moral relativism, lowered academic standards, and lack of discipline.
