Mike Smith:
Chris, based on your experiences as the founder of Home School Sports Network, what are some tips you can give parents who are thinking about starting a homeschool sports league?
Chris Davis:
When I do my workshops, I spend a lot of time on this topic. For brevity, I will run through this list rather quickly.
First of all, interested parents need to do a self-checklist to analyze their own schedule, how flexible are they; they have to judge their organizational skills, a little bit of their sports knowledge, and of course, people skills, since they will be working with homeschool students and other parents.
Next is to define your sports program—in other words, what kind of program are you going to have? Is it competitive, is it basketball only, is it more like a field day, is it physical education? And what age groups are you going to serve, as in, are you just doing varsity or are you doing all the age groups?
And then you need to become familiar with what facilities are available to you. If you're flexible, then you'll have a better chance of obtaining better practice facilities. On my website, I list my top 10 suggested facility ideas and where you can find them.
Mike:
Well, thank you, Chris. Listeners, join us next time as we continue our discussion of homeschool sports. And I'm Mike Smith.
