What's so important about tradition?
Volume 53, Program 21

Did you celebrate our nation's birthday with the traditional fireworks and a backyard barbecue yesterday? Then join Michael Farris and his guest as they talk about strengthening the family through traditions, on today's Home School Heartbeat.

    Mike Farris:
I'm talking today with Noel Piper, who's the author of Treasuring God in Our Traditions. Noel, welcome to the program.

    Noel Piper:
    Thanks, great to be here.

    Mike:
Noel, you and John have been married for over 30 years. You're a grandmother, mother of five, and a pastor's wife. What prompted you to write this book on traditions?

    Noel:
Well, I started thinking a lot about traditions, especially after our first child was born, because it became obvious to me that we couldn't just keep on doing the things that we were doing sort of by habit—we really needed to think more clearly about how God was at the center and how we were reflecting what's most important to us for the sake of our children. And then now, of course, as time has passed, we realized that the things that we do to make God clearer to our children also reinforced his presence and importance in our own lives. So that's the heart of it. And then as time passes more, you start to realize that even the very everyday things you do, like praying at meals and having family devotions and telling stories to your children, are traditions that are strengthening them and building God into their lives.

    Mike:
Noel, I know that families are going to be built up as they put the principles you depict in your book to work. I'm Mike Farris.

In this book, Noel Piper opens her home to you, sharing biblically-rooted insights from her more than 30 years of marriage and child rearing. Come with her and enjoy this glimpse into how your family can learn to treasure God through traditions. Hardcover, 114 pages.
