Can homeschooled athletes compete at top colleges? Join Michael Farris as he discusses the possibilities on today's Home School Heartbeat.

    Mike Farris:
Homeschooled athletes are gaining recognition both academically and athletically. Homeschooler Jason Taylor played football at the University of Akron on an NCAA scholarship and in 1997 he signed a contract to play with the Miami Dolphins, where he's now their defensive end. In Oklahoma, homeschooler Kevin Johnson received a full scholarship from the University of Tulsa, playing on their championship basketball team. And in 1998 through '99, the NCAA granted eligibility to 49 homeschooled athletes in Division I, and 20 in Division II.

Help your aspiring athlete get ahead of the game by exploring recruitment and scholarship opportunities early. Attending a summer camp at your chosen college is a great way to check out the facility and the coach. Be sure you document your skills through outside sources, and get advice from your current coach or mentor.

As high school juniors, students may receive written contact from prospective coaches. Many coaches use online recruitment surveys to get information about prospective athletes. After July 1st following their junior year, phone conversations with coaches are also allowed.

Though for most sports the NCAA forbids official paid visits with coaches before the beginning of the senior year, students can research athletic programs and coaches on their own.

Though the competition is tough, homeschoolers are finding there is room at the top, both on the field and in the classroom. I'm Mike Farris.
