Preparing your child to face the working world can be a difficult task. Today on Home School Heartbeat, Mike Smith and Inge Cannon discuss how a mentor can help a child discover the right vocation.

Mike Smith:
Now, you mentioned one of the goals would be to prepare a child for employment. How do you do that in mentoring?


Inge Cannon:
What I find is that parents need to be their children's primary career guidance counselor. There will be other counselors along the way, certainly, at that stage of life, but parents need to be the primary one and there are lots of tools that are available to help you in that process.


But never forget the prayerful input. If you please the Lord it doesn't matter who you displease, and if you don't please the Lord it doesn't matter who you please.


Mike:
Now, Inge, how can a parent know what a teen's talents and spiritual gifts are?


Inge:
My father used to say, "Blessed is the man whose work is his pleasure." They were so excited about what they were doing, and it brought them so much fulfillment, that it was just in the line of where their gifts actually were.


Some of that is going to be obvious just by where your children's interests lie, but other areas you're going to have to try things. And you're going to have to try music lessons and athletic things and try artistic pursuits and even try things in the trades and the crafts to find out what your children do well, and when they do well, reinforce them along those lines.
