A New Approach to Civics
Volume 52, Program 13

Does your high schooler think that studying government is boring? Then tune in as Michael Farris talks with Ned Ryun about a new approach on this edition of Home School Heartbeat.

    Mike Farris:
Generation Joshua is a great tool for helping students explore our national heritage. Ned, I'd like you to talk about the first part of the plan, which is the area of civic education.

    Ned Ryun:
Mike, one of the key components of Generation Joshua is the civics education. And what we want to do is give the young people a real grasp of America's godly heritage and the principles of the Founding Fathers and how they still apply today.

And one of the ways we're going about doing that is I'm posting writings and biographies of the Founding Fathers on the Generation Joshua site, having the young students read those writings, and then we get to discuss them online during chat sessions. And I think the thing that's encouraging to me is that these young people get to experience the writings of the Reverend John Witherspoon and Benjamin Rush and Noah Webster and John Dickinson, all very strong Christians in their own rights. It's exciting for me to see these young students get to experience the principles that these Founding Fathers displayed in their lives and writings and then be able to apply them to themselves today.

    Mike:
Ned, it's exciting to me to see young people schooled in the principles of the Founding Fathers, so that they understand how to evaluate today's events in light of those fundamental principles of freedom. That's so encouraging. Thanks for helping our young people learn these things. I'm Mike Farris.
