talks about the costs and benefits of homeschooling on today's Home School Heartbeat.
It's a choice which an increasing number of parents are willing to make. But it can be a difficult and challenging choice. Make no mistake: deciding to homeschool requires careful consideration. With no government subsidy, homeschoolers are effectively paying twice to educate their children—once to the state, which spends an average rate of $6,000 per child per year, and again for the purchase of a homeschool curriculum. In order to be worth the sacrifice, homeschooling needs to bring many benefits. If there are no benefits for our efforts, then why would we homeschool? Many families can testify to the wonderful benefits of homeschooling. What price can be placed on a child who is failing in school, and perhaps running with a bad crowd, and turns their life around when they're educated at home? Many such stories are found throughout the homeschool community. Families who have experienced this turnaround in a child's life are thankful that they made the necessary sacrifices for their children. Yesterday we talked about the difference between viewing our lives through the standard-of-living paradigm versus quality of life. Most homeschoolers can testify that trading standard of living for quality of life is a sacrifice well worth making. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith. |
