Where did we get the ideas underlying our nation's legal system? Join Michael Farris and his guest as they discuss Sir William Blackstone's contribution to American law, today on Home School Heartbeat.

    Mike Farris:
My guest today is Dr. Robert Stacey. He's an assistant professor and chairman of the Patrick Henry College Department of Government. Bob, welcome to the program.

    Dr. Robert Stacey:
    Thanks, Mike.

    Mike:
Bob, you've recently published a book on William Blackstone and his contribution to American law. What kindled your interest in Blackstone?

    Dr. Stacey:
At Patrick Henry College I teach a course called Freedom's Foundations. In that course, we talk about the various influences on the American founders. One of the significant influences that we spend a lot of time with is William Blackstone and the common law tradition.

What's always struck me most about Blackstone's work is his solid biblical foundation and his evident desire to be involved in the problems facing his culture. His culture was facing attacks from Enlightenment-era secularists (humanists who wanted to exalt man as the measure of all things rather than God). Blackstone refused to abandon his culture to forces like that, and that's a lesson that we can learn a lot from.

    Mike:
Bob, how important was the Bible to the foundation of Blackstone's writing?

    Dr. Stacey:
Blackstone was a serious and devout Christian who saw God's law as the foundation of all just human law, and so the Bible was central.

    Mike:
Bob, I look forward to talking with you this week about Blackstone's contributions to our country. I'm Mike Farris.
