Presenting a True Picture to the Public
Volume 51, Program 9
3/11/2004

Can homeschoolers receive fair treatment from the media? What actions can homeschoolers take to help present a true picture of homeschooling to the public? Mike Smith talks about these questions on today's Home School Heartbeat.

    Mike Smith:
Are there solutions to this latest negative campaign against homeschooling?

Part of HSLDA's mission is to promote homeschooling, and there have been many opportunities to present the truth about the benefits of homeschooling to a wide audience.

Fortunately, there are plenty of reporters who are willing to present a balanced picture of homeschooling.

Recently, USA Today endorsed homeschooling via an editorial, and there are many positive homeschooling stories which appear throughout the country which are regularly highlighted on the HSLDA website (hslda.org).

The fact that other media outlets did not follow the example of CBS and the New York Times suggests that the news media's bias against homeschooling is somewhat confined to these two influential outlets.

Homeschoolers should continue to do the best job possible in raising their children. People's lives speak for themselves.

Homeschoolers can also contact their local newspapers with homeschool success stories. Recently, the Evansville Courier in southwest Indiana completed a positive series on homeschooling using the examples of local homeschool families. Over time, news stories highlighting academically excellent and socially well-adjusted homeschool graduates will turn the tide decisively in favor of homeschooling.

God has been faithful to the homeschool community, and we thank him for his many blessings as we continue to raise our children in accordance with his Word.

And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
