Could same-sex unions jeopardize traditional marriage in our society? Michael Farris and Dr. James Dobson discuss the possible ramifications today on Home School Heartbeat.
Mike Farris:
Homosexual-rights advocates claim that denying them the right to marry is discriminatory. Jim, how could same-sex unions harm traditional marriages?
Dr. James Dobson:
Well, the answer is found in the courts, Mike. If the United States Supreme Court does what appears inevitable now and sanctions same-sex marriage, there's no way on earth that that court or another lower court will be able to deny special unions for two men and one woman or three women and one man or any other combination of people demanding their rights. Polygamy will be reintroduced into the law. And the entire legal basis for marriage will be destroyed.
Marriage is not an equal-opportunity activity. It has been reserved exclusively for one man and one woman in every country on earth for the past 5,000 years. Yes, there have been places where epidemics of homosexuality have been evident, such as Sodom and Gomorrah and Greece and Rome, but even there, marriage was recognized as a uniquely heterosexual arrangement. And it must be protected in the law.
