Do We Need a Constitutional Amendment to Protect Marriage?
Volume 51, Program 2
3/2/2004

Please note:
This interview was recorded a number of weeks ago. The discussion of the need for a constitutional amendment defining marriage was general and should not be understood to contain any special endorsement of specific language. To learn participants' positions on particular language, Home School Heartbeat listeners are encouraged to visit HSLDA's federal news page at nche.hslda.org and Focus on the Family's website at www.family.org.

Do we need a constitutional amendment to protect traditional marriage? Join Michael Farris and Dr. James Dobson as they discuss this topic today on Home School Heartbeat.

    Mike Farris:
Jim, there are proposals in Congress to pass a federal marriage amendment, which defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Just how important is this issue?

    Dr. James Dobson:
Mike, this is the most important issue facing us as a nation at this time. The courts and especially the United States Supreme Court has signaled that it's moving in that direction, and if it does, the nation and indeed western civilization will be in jeopardy. The federal marriage amendment is the only answer to this attack on marriage by liberal judges and it must be passed.

    Mike:
Jim, we've been working together on the federal marriage amendment for several months now. What can our listeners do to be involved in this important process?

    Dr. Dobson:
Mike, you're a constitutional lawyer and you know very well that it is so difficult to pass an amendment to the Constitution. It's only been done 27 times in our entire history. If the federal marriage amendment is going to be passed, it's going to take every effort we could make to influence the system. We've got to call; we've got to visit; we have to do everything we can to let our wishes be known. This is an issue that simply demands our involvement and we cannot sit this one out.

    Mike:
Let me strongly encourage our listeners to follow up and make those calls to Congress and the Senate to pass [a] federal marriage amendment. I'm Mike Farris.
